ESL Warmer: Creative Match

ESL Warmer: Creative Match

Creative Match  is a simple warmer or cooler activity that is a simple way to get students thinking and speaking. In this activity, students are shown two random items and they have to guess what connections there are between the two items. Aim: To practice speaking. Level: All levels Learning Objectives: Practice speaking and making connections between objects. Materials Needed: See example photos in the download below

Method

  1. Show students two pictures which are chosen at random.
  2. In pairs or as a class, students try and decide what connections there are between the two pictures.
  3. This activity can be done as a class where the teacher shows the pictures or as pair work where students are given a number of cards and they turn two at a time and decide the connection.
Note: The cards below can be used in two ways. If played in pairs, the examples below should be printed and then given to the students facedown. The students select two cards and turn them over. Then, they must decide what the connections are between the two items. If played in groups, the teacher should show students two images and have the class brainstorm how the two items are connected.   Remember, there are no correct or wrong answers. This game is about getting students speaking about the different objects.
